Mildew
Stains
Mildew can be a big problem. If you simply paint over it,
you will have it come right back through the new paint
relatively quickly. The best thing is to thoroughly clean
the mildew. This can be done with a solution of one part
household bleach to three parts warm soapy water. For
large exterior areas, powerwashing is a good idea to
remove it.
If the mildew areas are on the interior of your home, it
is highly recommended that you use an oil (alkyd) stain
killer product to seal them and prevent bleed through.
Alkyd stain killer products are very hazardous, and you
should plan to evacuate the area for at least 6-8 hours
for drying time. A face mask should definitely be worn
when using these products. The alkyd stain killer works
much better than the latex, so it is worth the trouble of
using them. |
