What
goes over what?
People are always asking
which paint can go over which when it's time to repaint.
This saying may help:" Latex over oil, makes your temper
boil". Providing the paint to be coated over isn't overly
shiny, oil based paint can go over oil or latex, and latex
can go over latex. The only problem area is when you try
to put latex over an oil, because oil based paint is a
harder, smoother surface, and the latex paint has less
surface area to bond to; it usually sluffs off soon after.
Try scuff sanding with a fine sandpaper, then use an oil
based primer; they do not get as shiny and hard as oil
based top coats, and will accept a latex on top of them.
