HOW TO MAKE A TINTED OIL GLAZE

Applying a tinted oil glaze to a surface is an excellent way of both softening and complementing the underlying color. Buy a transparent glaze from a paint store and add color or make your own glaze.

INGREDIENTS FOR 1 QUART (1 LITER)
Mix 2½ cups (0.6 liters) turpentine, 1 1/4 cups (0.3 liters) boiled linseed oil, 3/4 cup (0.2 liters) driers, and 1 tbsp whiting.

ADD COLOR
Mix mineral spirits and color to the desired tone. Add glaze a little at a time. Put in more color and mineral spirits for the right tone.

APPLYING A GLAZE

Apply a glaze to a matte oil- painted surface. When dry, cover with a coat or two of varnish. You can work on a glaze from ½ - 1 hour. Prepare a smooth surface, and coat with two layers of semigloss paint.

1. Apply the glaze with a decorating brush randomly over an area of 1 sq yd (1 sq m) at a time.

2. Use a wide, short bristled decorating brush to spread the glaze as evenly as possible.

3. Use a softening brush to smooth the glaze. If necessary, wipe the bristles on lint-free cloth.
