ESSENTIAL TIPS - HOME DECORATING

HOW TO REMOVE OLD WALLPAPER

New wallpaper should be hung on a smooth surface, ideally on top of lining paper. If the old wallpaper is in good condition, you can hang the new over it. However, old washable, vinyl, relief, or metal (foil) wallpaper must be removed.

1. Score the old paper using the sharp edge of a scraper. Do not use a knife to cut into the paper as you may damage the wall beneath. Cover the entire surface area in score marks.

2. If you wet the scored paper, it will rise away from the wall. Divide the wall into sections and soak the old wallpaper of each section using a sponge and warm water.

3. After a minute or so the wallpaper should easily come away from the wall. Scrape off the paper. Once you have removed the paper, lightly scrape the wall to remove any traces of glue.

VINYL WALLPAPER

This is easily removed by carefully peeling each length of paper off the wall.

STEAM STRIP OLD WALLPAPER

< STEAM STRIPPING

If you have a large area of wallpaper to remove, use a steam stripper. These come in various sizes and can be rented from hardware stores. With a steam stripper, you do not need to sponge the wallpaper. Score the old wallpaper with the sharp edge of a scraper, and then hold the steam stripper against the surface. As the paper begins to loosen, scrape it off with a wallpaper scraper.
