Painting aluminum clad windows is not as difficult as it may seem. A few simple steps is all you need to complete this project. This is a guide to help you get informed about the most common mistakes and how to avoid them and some tips to help you gain insight.

Cleaning

Cleaning your windows is imperative. You must remove any caulk prior to painting. Next, apply a quality degreaser using a car wash brush. Rinse away with clean water. Allow your windows to dry 72 hours to ensure proper adhesion. If your windows have mildew, use a solution of 1 part bleach to 3 parts water and rinse well. To remove caulk, use a dull putty knife at an angle and run your putty knife under the caulk and strip away.

Preparation

Before applying paint, use a scotch brite pad to scuff up the surface. This will improve adhesion by giving the paint a surface easy to stick on to. You must use an oil base primer for aluminum surfaces.

Painting

Use an exterior latex enamel following your oil base primer. You may apply with a brush or sprayer. Mask off any surfaces surrounding that you wish to protect from paint with tape. Choose an Alkyd paint, as they are formulated specifically to bond well with aluminum.
