Finishing drywall joints
Finishing drywall joints can be a meticulous operation.
Special drywall hammer
When you install drywall, use a specially designed hammer.
It's fitted with a slightly curved and textured head which
doesn't damage the panel and it leaves a slight embossing
that promotes the adherence of joint compound.
Preparations before wallpapering
If you're thinking of hanging a light colored wall paper
over a dark surface, remember that joints will show through
unless they're perfect. Apply a coat of oil-based wallpaper
primer before hanging the wallpaper. You'll avoid the joint
problem and facilitate the wallpaper's stripping when the
time comes.
Cutting drywall precisely
When you have to replace a piece of drywall and must work
around obstacles such as electrical outlets, switches and
ceiling lights, dust them with chalk line powder. Fit the
drywall against the obstacles and the dust will leave marks
where the holes must be cut. Cut the holes, fit the piece
and you'll only have to screw it into place.
Rapid joint compound drying
To promote rapid joint compound drying, add plaster of Paris
to the first two thin coats. The third and final coat must
be joint compound alone.
Smoothing joints with a squeege
When you want to fill joints quickly and easily on large
surfaces, apply the joint compound with a trowel. To finish
them use a squeege, dipping the rubber edge in water as you
go. Available in different sizes, a 30mm model is easy to
use and to clean. |
