Choosing a window
Are you planning to buy new windows? To avoid unpleasant
surprises, you should take proper measurements and carefully
verify your needs.
Shutters adjusted to fit, for the look
So that your shutters close properly, be sure that their
width is equal to half the width of the window. They'll look
better, even when they're always left open.
Cutting old panes of glass
Don't bother trying to cut glass panes from old windows, it
won't work. The reason is simple; the glass from these
windows is tempered and cannot usually be cut.
Polishing window and patio door rails
With windows and patio doors, a clean rail is no guarantee
of a perfect slide. Teflon spray is a product which is
designed for this purpose, but a polish with a "Pledge" type
product will also fit the bill.
Using ZIP caulking to attach insulating film
Many people insulate their windows with transparent plastic
film. This film traps drafts which makes it very useful as
insulation. But for installation it is recommended to use
ZIP Seal'n Peel from Mulco instead of two-sided tape. This
product goes on easily and in the spring it can be removed
as easily in a single operation which consists of delicately
pulling off the film which can be reused on smaller windows
in next year. |
