Windows
Windows should be compatible in style with other architectural elements of your home. A wide variety of different models is currently available on the market, each adapted to different tastes and budgets. But, it's important for you to make your choices carefully, especially in light of current concerns about energy costs.

Curving mouldings without breakage
To easily curve new mouldings, soak them in the bathtub in very hot water for about an hour. This should make your job much easier, particularly when replacing the type of semi-circular mouldings that are often found atop older windows.

Shutters adjusted to fit, for the look
So that your shutters close properly, be sure that their width is equal to half the width of the window. They'll look better, even when they're always left open.

Vibrating windows: putty or caulking
If your windowpanes vibrate frequently, it's a sign that the putty is too dry and no longer absorbs real or sonic vibrations. Replace it by first securely placing metal glazing points against the glass. Some use caulking in lieu of putty. The finish will vary, the efficiency will compare or be superior, and the aesthetic quality will vary depending on if the final product can be painted or not.

Cutting old panes of glass
Don't bother trying to cut glass panes from old windows, it won't work. The reason is simple; the glass from these windows is tempered and cannot usually be cut.

A cool house in the summer
When your house is very hot, or the humidity level is abnormally high, circulate the air to get rid of the bad air. Heat and humidity generated by cooking and showers can be vented by installing a horizontally vented fan in the kitchen and/or in the bathrooms. Also, install two window-mounted electric fans, one at the sunny end of the house to push out hot air, the other at the shady end to bring in the fresh air. On very hot days opaque blinds, located on the sunny side of the house, that can be closed in the early morning, will make a significant difference. Since they store less heat, select light colored wall coverings if you can.

Newspaper and vinegar for windows
To efficiently clean your mirrors and windows, use newsprint and a mixture of vinegar and water. Your windows will shine without a trace of paper fibre or residue.

Opening windows in the winter& and save money
Opening the windows once per week for about ten minutes on a mild, dry day, will circulate the inside air and expel accumulated humidity. Your home will be more comfortable and easier to heat.

Removing paint on glass and windows
It is well known that dried paint can be removed from glass with a razor blade. If the glass objects are textured or uneven, soak them in water and dishwasher liquid for a few hours.
