Cutting old panes of glass
Don't bother trying to cut glass panes from old windows, it
won't work. The reason is simple; the glass from these
windows is tempered and cannot usually be cut.
Painting old moldings
Over the years and after many coats of paint, door frames,
windows and wall molding joints are no longer well defined
and easy to trim. Carefully trace over the joints with a
plasterboard knife using a yardstick if necessary. The
traced cut will act as a paint dam? as long as you don't use
too much.
Pure
white silicone joints
To get rid of dark mold stains on silicone joints around the
windows, bathtub or elsewhere, soak cotton balls or a cloth
in chlorine bleach and place them on the stains. The joints
will return to their original white color.
Using ZIP caulking to attach insulating film
Many people insulate their windows with transparent plastic
film. This film traps drafts which makes it very useful as
insulation. But for installation it is recommended to use
ZIP Seal'n Peel from Mulco instead of two-sided tape. This
product goes on easily and in the spring it can be removed
as easily in a single operation which consists of delicately
pulling off the film which can be reused on smaller windows
in next year. |
